Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket. The game is played on a rectangular court, and points can be scored in various ways, including making field goals (inside or outside a designated three-point line) or free throws awarded after certain fouls.

The primary objective of basketball is to outscore the opponent within a fixed time limit, usually divided into quarters or halves. Players advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while walking or running) or passing it to teammates.

Basketball emphasizes skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and defensive strategies. It encourages teamwork, physical fitness, and agility. The sport has a global following and is played at various levels, from recreational games to professional leagues, with the NBA (National Basketball Association) being one of the most recognized professional leagues in the world.

Originating in the late 19th century, basketball has evolved into a prominent sport, featuring in major international competitions such as the Olympics and the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
